The extension and conversion of a listed former laundry in Wandsworth to a generous family home has received full Planning Approval and Listed Building consent.

Full planning approval and Listed Building consent has been granted for an extension and alterations of a Grade II listed building in Wandsworth Town Conservation Area. The former laundry block was previously utilised as an office space and will now be converted into a single-family dwelling house that blends well with the residential nature of the area. A sensitive design approach was taken to remodel this listed building, retaining most of the original historic fabric of the laundry block’s Arts and Crafts Style and removing any unsympathetic additions. The single-storey contemporary extension will be constructed with modern red bricks to respond to the original red bricks of the main building. The impact of the extension is softened by the roof garden and by partially setting the extension down to appear modest in scale.

The house was delicately remodelled to include a contemporary extension and roof garden, while preserving the original Arts and Crafts style.

The creative arrangement of the spaces to meet the needs of a family home while fitting within the old structure, which is substantially kept, is challenging yet rewarding.  An internal courtyard is built on the ground level to provide more natural light and air into the living area and bedroom. On the first floor, the master bedroom has windows that look out onto the green roof, and both bedrooms feature double height spaces with exposed roof structure and curved timber bracing, to provide generous room heights and an interesting play of levels.

Sustainability is carefully considered during the design process to support the listed properties’ modern living requirements. The environmental improvements include installing solar photovoltaic panels, a green roof to boost biodiversity, and replacing some of the older single glazed fenestration with historically sensitive double glazing to increase the home’s energy efficiency.
