Stitchcombe Mill
Marlborough, Wiltshire
Project Summary : Alex Tart Architects has been granted Planning permission in an area of outstanding natural beauty to renovate an 18th Century mill house. The mill lies in the valley of River Kennet at Mildenhall, Wiltshire, providing a stunning and picturesque view from the house towards the surrounding water meadow landscape. Alex Tart Architects has been granted approval for a higher volume than would typically be allowed, following a delicate and strategic planning process to push the limits of permitted alterations for a mill house extension.
The new project sought to restore something that had been lost by sensitively mimicking an old mill building. The proposal will link the existing property dating back to 1800s with a new two-storey mill-style extension that preserves the historical features, while blending with the surrounding river landscape to provide a stylish country home.
A hip gable with weather boarding, brickwork in Flemish bond with an irregular use of burnt headers, light iron-framed windows, and stepped eaves, imitating the vernacular style typical of mill buildings, were the materials chosen to reflect the character of neighbouring mill buildings along the River Kennet.
