Planning Approval and Listed Building Consent awarded for the complete renovation of Grade II Listed Property within St Peters Square Conservation Area, Hammersmith

The Grade II listed property in Hammersmith, is a charming 19th Century terraced cottage complete with traditional shopfront windows, creating an idyllic London streetscape. Alex Tart Architects were tasked with sensitively designing proposals for the scheme which pushed the limits of the property, without compromising the charming features which drew the clients to the home. This required us to blend both highly contemporary and period design elements in order to create a home that suited our clients design preferences whilst protecting the historic importance of the property.

Pushing the boundaries of a listed building’s acceptable alterations is a delicate act, and we worked closely alongside Heritage specialists, in order to understand the key elements of historic intrigue in the property. We tested these through a successful preapplication with the council, omitting some of the more ambitious elements such as a basement but, obtaining positive feedback on the creation of a new contemporary rear extension, incorporation of the garage into the main property to create a spare bedroom and bathroom, as well as the creation of a generous new master suite.

The extent of the alterations was only made possible by Alex Tart Architects engaging openly with the council on behalf of the clients, allaying any concerns they had, and proving that we had fully considered the importance of the historic fabric in the design process. The result is a modern intervention to a traditional cottage, large, glazed doors onto an internal courtyard bring natural light to the heart of the residence.
