Alex Tart Architects has been granted listed building and planning consent with discharge conditions for a Grade II listed house in Castelnau, Barnes, Richmond. This was aided by the team’s specialism in renovating listed properties, and extensive experience working with the Richmond-upon-Thames borough council. These factors played a key role in achieving the substantial alteration in a single application.

 

 

Given the house is part of the larger Castelnau Conservation Area and is listed as a Grade II property, we took a very sensitive approach to the design. The new contemporary extension is clearly distinguished from the traditional façade. The front elevation and interior of the 18th century family home have been preserved and restored in its complete original classical style and composition. The regency style townhouse is constructed of yellow stock bricks, and framed by two full-height decorative stucco pilasters on each side.

 

Work on site includes contemporary rear extension and remodelling of a coach house that contrasts with the traditional and historic architecture of the main house.

 

The main building’s traditional and historic fabric style serves as the backdrop, providing a striking contrast to the new design’s use of modern elements. The adjoining coach house has been sensitively remodelled to improve energy efficiency, and substantially extended the overall property whilst meeting modern living requirements. The renovation aims to conserve and enhance the rear elevation with a proposed contemporary extension featuring a dark metal cladding with curving roof and fully glazed opening to create an inside-out connection with a continuous flow to the garden.
