Construction commences following planning approval for a substantial extension of a Victorian house in Wandsworth Common Conservation Area.
Proposed extension and landscape Proposals for the scheme, Landscape design and image by Flint Garden Studio.
Planning consent has been granted for two-storey rear and basement extensions to a large family home on Gorst Road, Wandsworth. The proposals include a new full width rear extension and the complete renovation of the interior. Construction has started on site, and we are looking forward to seeing it realised over the coming months. The property is set within the Wandsworth Common Conservation Area and the sub area of Bolingbroke Grove.
The design includes a larger basement and a ground floor rear extension, whilst responding to and enhancing the distinctive character of the conservation area. Internally there is a strong contrast between the restored traditional detailing and the more contemporary extensions. The extensions to the rear consist of two distinct volumes. The two-storey rear extension will be in keeping with the overall character of the building with matching brick façade, tripartite sash windows and matching French doors, traditionally styled to appear as part of the original building.
The smaller single-storey extension is modern in design with large crittall glazing and rooflights providing plenty of natural light. This extension forms an intermediate level connecting the existing house to the garden. The rendered portion of the rear extension replaces existing canted curtain glazing bays with new crittal style heritage doors and windows. Lowering the floor level to match the garden, improves indoor-outdoor connection and creates a direct opening to the rear garden from the kitchen. As well as creating this connection to the property’s garden, the extension drastically increases the ceiling height for the kitchen thus improving the overall façade composition with a contemporary outlook that will appear visually distinct from the main house. Through our collaboration with landscape designer Flint Garden Studio, the landscape proposal harmoniously draws together our sensitive architectural design with a contemporary garden landscape.
